Matt Dickinson – Author Visit – 14th June 2017
22nd June 2017 Wendy Dossett

The author, Matt Dickinson, is a world renowned mountaineer and explorer, who only last month once again summited Mount Everest. He is also an award winning writer and film maker who has filmed extensively for National Geographic TV and Discovery Channel, including on the summit of Mount Everest. His book The Everest Files is a gripping mystery novel about a missing teenager on Mount Everest and the mission to discover the truth.

Every student in Years 6-9 received a copy of the novel to read over the Summer Half-Term holiday in anticipation of Matt Dickinson’s visit to the school on June 14th.  He talked to these year groups about his mountaineering adventures, film making and adventure writing.

During his visit he assessed internal Year group creative writing competitions, where prizes were given.  As the novel is full of extreme action and perilous events, students were asked to write a single side of A4, describing a scene or event where a character is in danger. The type of danger was not specified and imagination was encouraged.  Entries were judged on their descriptive detail and how well they engaged the reader.  Prizes for each year group varied.

There was also a book signing session in the Library.

Copies of his books are available in the Library.
